AbstractThe University of Western Australia's Target Student Support Project, initially funded by the Commonwealth government and subsequently by the institution, was designed to increase awareness and use of higher education opportunities among educationally disadvantaged secondary school students. The program had both academic and social components and was developed with considerable student input. Early program efforts were successful in achieving their stated objectives. Uncertainty of funding impaired its ongoing viability. Several conclusions about the program were reached. Objective support for improved academic persistence, performance, and satisfaction has not been demonstrated. Subjective evidence, including formal evaluation results and students' continued participation, is consistent and persuasive. The project offers the university an opportunity to demonstrate commitment to equity issues without compromising entry standards. It is part of a comprehensive plan to link with communities in which the university has had little impact. The student support service has demonstrated its ability to plan and supervise the complex project. The university's stated commitment to the student support service has not been demonstrated in its financial support. A system for determining the university's performance on equity issues should be implemented, and alternative channels should be established to coordinate this and other university equity projects.
