Abstract	Meeting the learning needs of older adults in rural areas is a critical and growing concern for adult and continuing education. This chapter addresses learning in a rural context for older adults by examining several constructs. These include the definitions of "rural," the issues of the learners' ages, and the various structures and purposes their learning takes. Three case studies that represent three very different groups of rural, older learners in pursuit of education for a variety of purposes are discussed: (1) learning for self-sufficiency; (2) learning for social action; and (3) learning for leisure or self-improvement. Implications for both theory and practice in adult and continuing education are discussed. (ERIC).
