AbstractThe aim of this hermeneutic phenomenological research was to explore the lived experiences of teachers, administrators, and parents of secondary students involved in online teaching and learning during the 2020-2021 school year. The second objective of this research was to illuminate any challenges of online education and to describe any recommendations for the future of online education teachers. Although many studies have been published on emergency remote learning, which happened during the spring of 2020, there is a lack of research about teaching during the 2020-2021 school year, when online classrooms were meant to serve as a stable learning environment. The findings indicate that teachers and administrators had an increased workload and focused on student engagement. Participants also struggled to form student-teacher relationships and were challenged with holding students accountable. Participants also reported that online education was beneficial in giving students access to their education, but felt students needed high amounts of self-motivation to succeed in online learning. This research will add to the current body of research surrounding education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
