Abstract | This dissertation utilizes autoethnography to explore myriad cultural and institutional changes that impacted the author's work as a writing tutor at a Midwestern university over the span of a decade. Utilizing both writing center theories and composition theories, data in this text--presented in the form of narrative nonfiction--chronicles successes and failures the author encountered while exploring various tutoring strategies, challenges a host of myths and assumptions related to writing tutoring, ponders the true function of writing centers within postsecondary education, and examines the needs and frustrations presented by first-generation students and adult/nontraditional students who sought guidance in the writing center. Finally, as an autoethnography, this text compels the author to confront his own place within writing center work, his strengths and weaknesses as both a tutor and a writing center administrator, microaggressions directed at his race, gender, and sexual orientation, and the efficacy of his tutoring praxis.
