AbstractThe California Articulation Number (CAN) Project was initiated in 1985 by the three public segments of higher education in California: the University of California (UC), the California State Universities (CSU), and the California Community Colleges (CCC). The CAN System provides a cross reference number for lower-division, transferable, introductory courses which have been determined by faculty to be acceptably exchanged, one for the other. Colleges qualify to use a CAN if they have written, faculty-approved articulation agreements on the course with a minimum of UC or CSU campuses. This compilation comprises eight documents about the CAN System, designed for different audiences and for different purposes, including: (1) a brochure for students outlining the basic features of the CAN System; (2) a 1985 introductory statement about the system, which outlines the steps colleges must take to qualify courses for CAN, the principles underpinning the system, and the members of the CAN Coordinating Committee; (3) CAN newsletters from February and November 1986, and June and December 1987, offering status reports on progress in implementing the system; (4) the "1986-87 Annual Report of the CAN System Coordinating Committee to the California Postsecondary Education Committee"; and (5) "A Guide to the CAN System" for colleges interested in participating in the project.
