Abstract | This guide was developed by the Portland (Oregon) Public Schools to assist district pre-kindergarten through grade-eight administrators and teachers in complying with federal and state mandates to develop and implement a plan for alcohol and other drug prevention instruction. The guide is based on the district-adopted curriculum, "Here's Looking at You, 2000," which includes instruction in three domains: cognitive/information, affective/bonding, and behavioral/skills. Included in the guide is a topic summary, with content areas (physical education, social studies, science, and health) for each topic identified. Instructional minimums, presented as learner outcomes, for each grade level (Pre-K, K, grades 1 through 8, and middle school) are outlined for the cognitive/information and behavioral/skills domains. Separate sections detailing instructional minimums for special education are also given for each grade level. The appendices include: the Oregon Administrative Rule which mandates implementation of alcohol and other drug use prevention instruction, a section listing Oregon law related education resources, and a list of selected materials on prevention.
