AbstractThis manual was designed to help incorporate the seven Dietary Guidelines for Americans, published by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, into a health or physical education curriculum and to make nutrition education contemporary, interesting, and relevant at either the junior or senior high school level. The publication consists of 9 lessons which include reproducible self-tests and activity masters. Lesson 1 is an overview of the Dietary Guidelines. Lessons 2 through 8 each focus on one of the 7 Guidelines. In each lesson, learning activities help students to recognize scientific evidence supporting the Dietary Guidelines; to evaluate their own food behavior or knowledge in relation to the Guideline; and to explore practical ways to meet the Guideline. Lesson 9 provides a summary which reinforces previous learning and helps students incorporate the guidelines into a plan of action for good health. Learning strategies are designed to help motivate and increase teens' understanding and use of the Dietary Guidelines, while hands-on activities encourage critical thinking and problem solving. Some activities are keyed for integration with other subject areas--science, social studies/current issues, language arts, art, and mathematics. (LL)
