Abstract | One potential asset to science learning that is often overlooked is the presence of learning institutions, other than schools, located in metropolitan areas. These "informal" learning institutions include universities, libraries, museums, science centers, and similar places. These organizations have the potential to provide resources, in the form of teaching materials, teacher training, or even student enrichment programs, that can promote student interest and understanding in science beyond the classroom curriculum. In an effort to encourage urban teens to explore their interests in science outside of the classroom, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County implemented a series of inter-session enrichment classes (IECs) aimed at providing out-of-classroom science learning experiences for local high school students. This article describes this museum-based program, which demonstrates an alternate approach to promoting science education in urban areas using non-school resources. (Contains 2 tables.) (ERIC). |
