Abstract | The successful completion of high school can be a difficult accomplishment, one which nearly nine percent of all students fail to achieve. The negative effect both on the dropout student, and on our society, is tremendous. Educators and counselors are seeking interventions that are brief but effective in order to address the underlying psychological and emotional issues related to dropping out behavior. Recent studies have demonstrated that adventure-based counseling is an effective intervention for adolescents to increase their self-efficacy. This study demonstrated that a one-day ropes course significantly increased the participants' self-efficacy, as well as increasing several other significant areas within the students' self-concepts. The study further showed that demographics such as grade-point average, socioeconomic status, parents' marital status, age, and gender did not change the outcome of the intervention. Each participant significantly increased his or her self-efficacy. This study discusses significant implications for educators and for counselors, including recommendations for researchers and interventionists.
