Abstract | This article discusses the use of self-assessment to chart the course of students' learning. Rather than experiencing school as a journey on an unknown sea to an unknown destination, it is possible for students to use formative self-assessment as a navigational chart and compass--to know where they are going, how they are going to get there, and whether they need to make learning adjustments along the way. At a time when lifelong learning is an expectation for personal and societal success, the author suggests that it is incumbent upon middle school educators to take advantage of their students' stage of development and make self-assessment, as a means of learning how to learn, an essential part of teaching and assessment practices.
