Abstract | The U.S. Office of Education has undertaken the preparation of a series of basic studies on education in a number of Central and South American countries under the sponsorship of the Interdepartmental Committee on Cultural and Scientific Cooperation. This series of studies is part of a program to promote understanding of educational conditions in the American countries and to encourage cooperation in the field of inter-American education. The project, a part of the Government-wide program of cultural cooperation under the auspices of the Department of State, was begun in the fall of 1943. It involves travel by Office of Education specialists in the various countries for the purpose of gathering data first hand on their educational systems, and the preparation of reports from these data for publication. "Education in Haiti" is based on data gathered by the author in Haiti in 1945 and supplemented since then through documentary study. Chapters include: (1) Basic Problems; (2) Haitian Schools of Yesterday; and (3) Haitian Schools since 1931. Appended are: (1) Budget of the Direction Generale of Urban Instruction, 1934-44; (2) Physical Education; (3) Programs of Studies; (4) Examinations for the Certificate of Secondary Studies; (5) Enrollment in Secondary Schools, 1944-45; (6) Inventory of the National Library, 1944; and (7) Memorandum of Agreement between the Haitian Government and the Inter-American Educational Foundation, Inc., 1944. A bibliography is included. Individual chapters contain footnotes. (Contains 4 figures and 7 tables.) [Best copy available has been provided.] (ERIC). |
