Abstract | This module on wellness includes eight lessons, and is oriented toward middle school students in grades 5-8. Students choose partners to support them in achieving their goals for improving health in several areas. In lesson 1, health and wellness are defined. Students are introduced to a wellness continuum and the physical, mental/emotional, and social aspects of health. Lesson 2 emphasizes the importance of lifestyles and personal health behaviors to achieve wellness. Lesson 3 encourages students to practice daily positive personal health habits, and lesson 4 describes and demonstrates components of fitness through exercise. Lesson 5 provides a brief overview of nutrition. Students create healthy breakfast menus and choose a personal nutrition goal. Lesson 6 examines a variety of factors that contribute to stress, and introduces techniques for stress management. In lesson 7, students examine the concept of risk. They research common dangerous behaviors, and consider behaviors that reduce the risk potential. Lesson 8 offers students an opportunity to assess their wellness with a health styles survey. Throughout the module, wellness action plans are introduced, which encourage students to take actions that can improve their health and wellness.
