AbstractIn this article the author uses the term "conservative dancers" to describe dancers who live in communities or families that are socially, culturally, or religiously conservative with ideological consistency, adhering to traditional values that they deem to be moral (e.g., modest dress, clear gender roles and separation, purity, family focus, and opposition to homosexuality). Mainstream dance programs, on the other hand, are more culturally and socially liberal in nature, with gender-mixed classes and performances, an embrace of all sexualities, body-revealing dancewear (often for both safety and aesthetic purposes), and a general pedagogical leaning toward openness or even permissiveness. Dance technique and customs can ask conservative dancers to compromise their traditional values to participate. The author's own experiences working with conservative communities have convinced her that inclusion is needed and welcomed. She shares her stories from three contexts: with conservative Jewish girls in Chicago, as part of the U.S. State Department's diplomacy efforts in Egypt, and at a children's cancer hospital with conservative Muslim families.
