AbstractThis chapter examines the principles of shared governance and shared leadership, including the obstacles to achieving those ideals. It then offers examples of deliberation and dialogue in concrete governance challenges. The chapter concludes with a series of questions that a campus might use to assess its own shared governance practices and to determine how deliberative approaches can be utilized to create a more democratic, participatory community. Essentially, the intent of the chapter is to connect the democratic purposes of higher education--to produce graduates who are capable of functioning as effective citizens in a pluralistic democracy--with the ways in which educators govern themselves. If educators do not practice what they preach, they cannot expect their students to learn and be committed to creating the kind of effective, pluralistic democracy that is arguably one of the core purposes of higher education in the United States.
