Abstract | Today, America faces a shifting and demanding economic and workforce environment. Americans know that the workplace is changing but not where it's heading. Each demonstration of the latest breakthrough technology can have enormous impact on the society, opening up entire new industries and markets and instantly limiting the viability of others. Of course, all of this affects the teaching and learning environment. The 10 jobs in highest demand by the year 2010 will not have existed in 2004. The pressure on higher education to equip students with relevant skills is real and challenging. How can higher education prepare its students for success in the workforce amidst a shifting economic landscape and increasing school dropout rate? The author offers recommendations for strengthening postsecondary access and providing educational opportunity. (Contains 6 notes.) (ERIC). |
