Abstract | Abstract This paper analyzes what developing South and Southeast Asian countries are doing in order to improve the qualifications of their teachers. The first section examines the perceived inadequacies in the pre-service and in-service teacher training programs in these countries. The second section discusses how these countries have confronted these inadequacies: -by expanding in-service teacher training programs, -by improving pre-service teacher training programs, and -by trying to make teaching a more self-fulfilling profession. In the conclusion, some projections are made about future directions these countries may take to improve further the quality of their teaching personnel. |
