Abstract | Abstract The participation of universities in secondary school education in Nigeria began with the founding of the West African Examinations Council, followed by the setting up of the West African School Certificate Examination; this resulted in subsequent recognition of the West African School Certificate and other examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council. The West African Examinations Counsil inherited from the English universities their role in the promotion of secondary school education. The Nigerian universities themselves have faced many difficulties in their effort to become more actively involved in secondary education. Arguments advanced for the need for local universities to be more directly associated with secondary education and to provide academic leadership in the country are reviewed and the author concludes with suggestions on how universities should provide academic leadership. |
