Abstract | The creative process can be a bloody venture, both literally and figuratively. As someone who has endeavored, instinctively and through great struggle, to express himself through various creative forms throughout his life, the author know how formidable the experience can be. September 11 is a globally significant historical date, which for most, evokes the series of coordinated terrorist attacks on the US in 2001. For him, however, September 11 also arouses the memory of the military coup in Chile in 1973, an event that had an even more profound impact on my young, formative being, especially as an artist. He has always been struck by the powerful role of cultural workers in the struggle for social change, and have attempted to honor their leaders in my art. Victor Jara was a Chilean singer/songwriter, theatre director, poet, academic, and political activist. When he was brutally murdered by the Chilean military during the coup-tortured, fingers severed from his hands, shot dead, and thrown into the streets he was moved to memorialize him. |
