Abstract | As a new teacher in 2008, the author inherited an awesome advocacy tool from her predecessor, art educator Stephania Crowder, via her annual sidewalk art activity. In this activity, students recreate art masterpieces on a 4-5' (1-1.5 m) scale on the sidewalk leading to the front entrance of the school. This project never fails to garner positive attention from visitors, students, family members, surrounding neighbors, teachers, and school administrators. Students look forward to and enjoy participating in this collaborative, public art project in the springtime. This lesson in both art history and art production gives students the opportunity to work as a team and show off their skills to friends, family, and the community at large. Plus, it is a full school-day's work that allows them to spend a day enjoying the lovely spring weather while they work. (ERIC). |
