AbstractContextual mathematics is an area of mathematics teaching and learning through which researchers and educators believe that mathematics is better taught, and learned, if connected to real-life situations and problems. It is also very helpful if it makes sense in the students' world. Thus, the author decided to start a project by creating a blog, and gave a 5-point grade as an incentive for students to get involved in that project at University A. University B was involved at a later stage. The project involves students searching on-line, in books, in magazines, in articles, and on websites--then, using the blog in order to interact with each other, share findings, and learn real-life applications of matrices in a constructive and fun way. In this article, the author documents her experiences working with the two sets of university students. She discusses the blog's posts and comments made by students about the real-life applications of matrices, and the impact of blogging on student motivation, learning and understanding in-depth notions studied in the classroom.
