AbstractThis article describes a miniature painting project that allows students to research a master painter and then replicate the work on a smaller scale. This lesson focuses on the students' ability to learn to identify style, subject matter, themes, and content in painting through the study of historical paintings, and the application of various painting techniques in the replication of a historical artwork. In this project, high-school students: (1) use visual characteristics to group paintings into historical, social and cultural contexts; (2) find meaning in historical paintings by analyzing, critiquing and evaluating selected artworks; and (3) experiment with a variety of painting techniques and processes. The author shares how the miniature paintings created by the students made a big impact when they were exhibited at a school art show. (ERIC).
