Abstract	The environment is comprised of multiple dimensions, including natural, social, and built surroundings that people experience locally. Taken as a whole these local environs make up the larger ecological conditions experienced globally. Fostering a critical awareness of nature is the first step in supporting ecological or social change. Art educators have a responsibility to bring their students' everyday lives into communion with artmaking in the classroom. A primary responsibility of art education in the 21st century is to help students examine local culture and ecology. In this article, the author illustrates how big terms such as "ecology," "place," and "site" can be defined locally, and used to hone the intentions and means of student art making. As an art educator, the author shares lesson units incorporating studies of local Maine artists, observations of local birds, and collecting and artfully transforming "useful" debris.
