Abstract | Winthrop Middle School's cafeteria had three paintings on the wall in which the paint was fading and the plaster was falling off. Many students wanted a change since the paintings had been there for over 15 years. This situation seemed appropriate for a service learning project for this Winthrop, Maine middle school. After the students reviewed prints by artists Jackson Pollock and Wassily Kandinsky and their use of nonrepresentational line and color and how they created rhythm and movement, it was time to paint. Paint and brush donations were received from parents and local companies and old clothing and aprons were collected. Four groups painted for 15 minutes each at each grade level. Additionally, some of the teachers and staff painted, as well as the visual and performing arts specialist. Former students were then asked to come in and finish the mural. The graduates came in for a day while on break from college to discuss their artwork and current creative endeavors with each grade level and were given themes to work with. When the mural was completed, each grade level came down to take a closer look at the mural and come up with words to describe and title it. The word "journey" was chosen as the title because the word allows viewers to bring their own ideas of a journey to the mural. (ERIC). |
