AbstractA good high school cultural arts program puts students' creative talents on display, allows them to demonstrate innovative thinking, and gives them direct and indirect exposure to careers in the cultural arts. A truly outstanding program goes even further to emulate real-world authentic artistic experiences and to create multidisciplinary artistic opportunities for students. By those definitions, the film festival at Walpole (Massachusetts) High School, now in its eighth year, is an outstanding cultural arts program and an enriching experience for the entire community. The film festival developed out of an extracurricular club that was led by a faculty member with a knack for amateur filmmaking and some substantial start-up money from a local computer foundation. It has become part of the curriculum and a complex, sophisticated cultural arts activity that incorporates drama, dance, graphic design, journalism, music, and technology. But it is more than just an academic elective that culminates in a film festival. It is important to the culture of the school community. This article describes how students at Walpole replicate Hollywood by writing, choosing, acting in, directing, filming, editing, and scoring films--and then participate in a multiday film festival.
