Abstract | This article reviews five large national studies that include significant findings about the effects of early care and intervention on the children of teens. Five large-scale, national early childhood intervention research trials have included teen parents: Early Head Start, Nurse Family Partnership, Parents as Teachers, Healthy Start/Healthy Families America, and Abecedarian. Collectively, the studies suggest four conclusions: (1) Teen parenting is only one of many risk factors for healthy development. (2) Early childhood interventions can make a positive difference in the educational outcomes of teen parents. (3) Teens seem to be harder to serve than older mothers. (4) Early childhood intervention programs need to do something to work more successfully with teen parents. (As Provided). |
