AbstractIn early nineteenth-century England, workers now known as Luddites roamed the countryside destroying machinery that they saw as creating unemployment and upsetting their traditional way of life. They believed that the growing mechanization of production, what people would now call technological change, and the expanding volume of trade ushered in the industrial revolution and disrupted traditional patterns of life. The neo-Luddite movement of today has similar worries and is evidenced by the antiglobalization sentiments that produced riots in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in Seattle, Paris, and London. A clear lesson from history is that changes in technology and increased trade both destroy jobs and create new ones, thereby creating great opportunity and wealth for some and unemployment and hard times for others. On balance, however, economists are uniform in their belief that technological change benefits not only producers and consumers but, in the long run, workers as well. This article explores the impact of trade and technological change on employment within a modern context, with a view toward the job prospects for students enrolled in the programs typically offered at the community college.
