Abstract | Summer is fast approaching, and it will soon be time to climb the mountains to get their good tidings, as naturalist John Muir put it. In other words, librarians must now prepare for the influx of patrons making weekend recreational and summer vacation plans by stocking up on books and other resources on the great outdoors. Outdoor recreational activities are myriad and diverse, ranging from old popular standbys like camping, hiking, and canoeing to emerging sports such as sea and surf kayaking and geocaching. In these tough economic times, most of these activities are relatively inexpensive, if not free. Most patrons seeking outdoor recreation materials are likely to be beginners desiring introductory information. For this reason, this article will focus on guides that cover the basics of outdoor recreation in the United States, as opposed to field guides to exotic locales or high-risk sports like mountain climbing. Only warm weather activities that patrons will pursue in the coming months will be addressed in this article. (ERIC). |
