Abstract | This article describes the use of touch as a strategy to teach children with multiple handicaps. Touch cues help children to anticipate events and to interpret information from the environment. Caregivers should first observe the child's existing repertoire of movements, and then create touch cues that build upon the child's preferred movements. Touch cues can be used to alert a child of an upcoming event, such as being picked up or fed. The author describes a number of strategies for developing a system of touch cues, such as repetition, interactive games, imitative touch, emphatic movement, and vocal inflection. The use of touch cues helps children gain control over their environment and provide a vehicle for communication between child and caregiver. (As Provided). |
