AbstractFor several years the author has sought ways by which he can employ film in a creative and academically sound manner as a teaching device. In this article, the author describes the History and Film course he developed for his students. The author began by compiling lists of films that he felt supplemented the subject matter covered in his survey courses and also offered students the extra credit option of analyzing a film and relating it to the course content. This proved so successful that he has developed the idea further. At present, the Film & History Project is the central resource for student research efforts in his lower division American history and Western humanities classes. The project incorporates the author's belief that, as one scholar has written, "Studying artifacts such as popular film yields insights that other historical methods cannot." The results have been gratifying: engaged students, interesting papers, and a whole lot of learning going on. The course description of the Filmography course developed by the author is presented. (Contains 27 notes.) (ERIC).
