Abstract | This article traces the way in which a study by a practitioner researcher into the experience of identity is interwoven into everyday practice, and impacts on the future development of the self and how research is framed. I am a woman, a headteacher, a wife, a mother, and this range of identities, together with the labels and the expectations in regard to my practice, are central to the thinking that underpins my research. I set out to explore if other women heads who are mothers faced the same kind of experiences and what this may mean for practice and research. Hence the article gives an account of my doctoral work that investigated the concept of dialogic identities as it is experienced in the lives of 20 women who are mothers and primary school headteachers in the North Midland area of England. The voices of the subjects are used to illuminate the historical and social construction of identity, motherhood and headship. (Contains 51 notes.) (As Provided). |
