Abstract | In this article, the author talks about the lessons she and her colleagues had learned when they went to the Pikler Institute in Budapest, Hungary. The Pikler Institute is a residential nursery founded by Dr. Emmi Pikler in 1946. In order to improve the quality of children's relationship with adults, they need to feel that: (1) he/she belongs; (2) he/she is being cared for; (3) he/she matters; (4) each interaction is filled with pleasure, and (5) it feels good to be cared of. The adult's role is to meet the child's needs, not just the physical, but the emotional as well. They also learned about caregiving with respect and learning to hold an infant. (ERIC). |
