Abstract | Reading Recovery is a short-term intervention program for first-graders who are at risk of failure in reading and writing. More than 1.5 million children have been served in the United States since 1984, and pre- and post-test Observation Survey scores have been collected across the nation for the past 20 years. Yet there is a need to determine whether program gains in Grade 1 are maintained in later years as measured by standardized achievement tests. In their first statewide, longitudinal record linkage project, Ruhe and Moore (2005) showed that Maine children who were in Reading Recovery in 1998 performed within the state average band on the 2001 Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) fourth-grade reading and writing scales (Cohort 1). In this paper, Ruhe reports the statewide results for Cohort 2--Maine children who had been in Reading Recovery in 1999 and who took the Grade 4 MEA in 2002. These results confirm Ruhe and Moore's (2005) Cohort 1 results, which show Reading Recovery has sustained effects on fourth-grade reading and writing performance. (Contains 8 tables.) (Author). |
