Abstract	The list of issues confronting education leaders today seems to be growing longer, with school wellness being pushed to the forefront by the surge in childhood obesity rates. Whether walking the halls of the schools or the local shopping mall, it is easy to see why society needs to adopt healthier lifestyles. That is why more community leaders, parents and government officials now are looking to schools to play a greater role in advancing the wellness of children. While many people acknowledge the problem of obesity and understand that healthy kids learn better, finding the time and resources to make a meaningful impact on school wellness is anything but easy. This article discusses three factors that are needed to create an effective school wellness environment: (1) personal commitment; (2) community partners; and (3) creativity. Using this formula, the Maranacook Area Schools in central Maine have improved physical activity and nutritional opportunities for students at each of their six school campuses. (ERIC).
