Abstract	This article is based on a research project carried out by the author between 1997 and 2001. The article or story has two main characters: the pacifier and the concept of childhood. The idea is to use the pacifier optically, as a text and a context where the pacifier is a starting point for interpretations and reflections about modern Norwegian childhood, and, thereby, also about culture in general. The author focuses particularly on conceptions about the pacifier and the development of traditions relating to weaning off the pacifier. In the research project, the actual texts are drawn from conversations with seven middle-class mothers, between 26 and 72 years of age, supplemented with other stories and traditions from Norway and Scandinavia and reflections on the authors' own experiences.
