Abstract"The Age of Beauty: Women for Flood Relief 2005-2006: Celebrating the Spirit of Peterborough," is a calendar that successfully raised funds for flood victims while contributing to the reinvention of images of "powerful rebellious old women" by offering dynamic images of older women's strengths, creativity and spirit. During a time of crisis in this small Ontario city, photography became a tool for community solidarity and social justice. The purpose of this research was to uncover the views of various participants in the Age of Beauty project, including the coordinator, three "models" and the photographer. For this article the author had a conversation with Mary Snack who coordinated the project and with Doris Neufeld, a "model," involved as the Administrative Assistant of Mayor Sutherland who initiated the project. The author taped interviews with Rosemary Ganley and Linda Slavin, two "models," as well as with Michael Cullen, the photographer invited to join the project. While this is a story about older women, it is also about a positive collaboration between older women and a younger male photographer. In summary, the Age of Beauty calendar raised $200,000 for flood relief, and, according to the people interviewed, raised consciousness about older women. The author suggests that this project challenged assumptions about older women and exploded the image of older women as sweet and genteel. (ERIC).
