Abstract | Studies by many scientists have shown that the fetal period is the most important one for the development of a baby. It has been shown that this is the time when the basis for many diseases of the adult is formed. Among risk factors, the work environment is of considerable importance, as its influence on the woman's organism stands at 25 to 40 percent. Every profession includes specific factors that have an effect on reproductive function. The residents of children's homes are also often found to have many risk factors, especially of the fetal period. In this study, the author examines the effect that types of women's work activity have on the development of their children brought up outside the home. The survey covered 1,096 children with psychoneurological conditions and who had lived in orphanages in St. Petersburg from infancy to the age of four. The survey shows that the mother's work activity plays a definite role both during the stage of intrauterine development and in postnatal ontogenesis (development after birth). In combination with other factors, a mother's type of work activity determines the reason that a child is placed in an orphanage facility, and it has an effect on the child's development and future fate.
