Abstract | The argument of this paper is that in Africa, women in the past, received much support from the extended family and residential household in performing their task in child-rearing and providing early childhood education. The break up of the residential compound life, in the typical African residential household, three or more generations lived together and the grandmother and grown up daughters assist the mother. There is a saying that it is the whole village that rears the children. The current pressure on the women to go outside the home to work even during the years of child-rearing, has exposed a major gap in children's development. This calls for urgent attention to be paid to how society can assist young mothers in delivering adequate and satisfactory early childhood education and care to their pre-school children. (ERIC). |
