| Abstract | The prism concert concept was introduced in this country at the Eastman School of Music in 1975. The development of Eastman's inaugural prism concert is commonly attributed to Donald Hunsberger and Gustav Meier, conductors of the wind ensemble and orchestra, respectively. The basic idea is that different styles of music performed by different types and sizes of ensembles are presented, uninterrupted by applause or staging adjustments, using the entire venue rather than just the stage. The performances are lit individually, so that each one is highlighted against the dark auditorium. Furthermore, the final notes of each piece overlap the beginning of the next piece; each work morphs both musically and dramatically--to become a new one, performed at a different location, with its own lighting.
