Abstract | In this article, the authors explain how they leveraged the popularity of the "Star Wars" franchise to introduce a task steeped in popular culture as a fun way to engage their students in investigating complex mathematics that have real-life connections to careers in toy design and engineering design in general. The authors share various aspects of the multiday lesson to highlight the students' deep mathematical reasoning. The article starts with the introduction of the task, in which the authors challenged students to sketch a 2D prototype droid using paper and pencil, followed by creation of their 3D prototype using technology. The lesson includes the students computing the "cost" of the action figure they created. (ERIC). |
