AbstractGeneralizing, conjecturing, representing, justifying, and refuting are integral parts of algebraic thinking and mathematical thinking in general (Lannin et al., 2011). The activity described in this article makes a case for generalizing as an overall mindset for any introductory algebra or geometry class by illustrating how generalization problems can be used to develop algebraic reasoning and meaningful symbol use (Kinach, 2014). The activity is presented in the context of technology, three-dimensional geometry, and spatial visualization--things that help students build on the innate pattern-recognizing capability of the brain that allows us to see the general in the particular (Mason et al., 2010; Kinach, 2014). Technology can also play a powerful role in developing students' reasoning and sense-making skills, while also helping them communicate better. This activity can be used with middle grades and high school students but has also been implemented in mathematics classes designed for preservice teachers. (ERIC).
