Abstract | This article is an examination of intersecting outcomes of deteriorating student mental health, disrupted socialization skills, declining preparatory academic performance, and the impact of traumatic domestic and global events on a diverse and digitally immersed Generation Z. The underlying and enduring organizational structure common to almost every college and university in the United States shapes culture, influences policy decisions, and reinforces professional and disciplinary specialization and identity in ways that often impede the delivery of services critical for student success and well-being. The author recommends fundamental rethinking of the way one cares about today's students, starting with their point of view, and modifying the academic and organizational functions along with the underlying culture to support them.
