Abstract | A wealth of research exists on the implementation of parenting programs within correctional facilities, yet the programs are diverse in structure and outcome measurements. Only a handful of parenting programs have targeted deficiencies in literacy while also creating opportunities for mothers and grandmothers to communicate with their (grand)children. The current study implemented a piloted experiential-learning project led by faculty in criminal justice and teacher education departments, alongside undergraduate students. Bonding Through Books allowed incarcerated mothers/grandmothers to learn techniques of impactful reading through face-to-face and recorded read-aloud tutoring sessions. The project culminated in mothers/grandmothers recording themselves reading a children's book to then be mailed to each (grand)child. Pre- and posttest measures included the Rhody Secondary Reading Attitude Assessment and the Parenting Sense of Competency Scale. Although results did not produce significant changes pre/posttest, anecdotal evidence suggests success for the project and a reconsideration for sample selection. (As Provided). |
