Abstract | Until recently, it was not unusual for student sections to be sold out at many college basketball games (Brown, 2017; Piatt & Pride, 2020). However, a decreasing trend of student attendance at college basketball games has emerged (Brown, 2017; Piatt & Pride, 2020). To address the decline of student attendance, the new head men's college basketball coach reached out to a sport marketing professor at the university to discuss involving the class in an experiential learning activity. After several meetings to address the marketing goals and process, it was agreed that the graduate sport marketing class would partake in an experiential learning activity to develop marketing strategies to attract students to home basketball games for the 2020-2021 season. Marketing has been cited as a practical field in which experiential learning can enrich student learning and stimulate learning motivation (Brennan, 2014; Petkus, 2000). Furthermore, experiential learning has been broadly perceived as a valuable way to bridge marketing theory with business experience and prepare students for their profession (Payne et al., 2011). Using Kolb's (1984) experiential learning theory (ELT) model, this paper describes how an experiential learning project was implemented in a graduate sports marketing class. (ERIC). |
