Abstract | Incarceration in the United States affects not only the individuals incarcerated, but also the whole family system, including children. 1.5 million children younger than 18 have had parents incarcerated at some point in their life (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021), and children have been called the hidden victims of the mass incarceration that is currently affecting the United States. This article uses a developmental approach to describe experiences, challenges, and suggested therapeutic interventions for children of incarcerated parents. This is done through the character of "Bobby." Bobby is a child whose mother is incarcerated. In the scenarios, Bobby is a boy, but could just as easily be a girl. The sections showcase the impact of parental incarceration at three discrete developmental stages: infancy, childhood, and adolescence. In each developmental period, two life scenarios are chosen for Bobby. Each section is followed by a description of therapeutic interventions, along with some national resources. (ERIC). |
