AbstractNonprofit commercials are an inspiring but often overlooked resource in language teaching. Teachers can use these short and thought-provoking films in different scenarios with communicative language activities and strategies and to help students practice skills that form part of Bloom's so-called higher-thinking skills, such as creating (using information to create something new), evaluating (critically examining information and making judgments), and analyzing (taking information apart and exploring relationships) (Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning 2020). In addition, these films can promote the development of crucial transferable skills, such as media and film literacy, that are needed in the twenty-first century. This article discusses techniques that nonprofit commercials employ, shows ways of exploiting them for teaching English, and provides a list of films in the Appendix that may be of interest to English language teachers.
