Abstract | Goal setting is a common process used in sport, business and education to influence motivation, increase effort, and enhance performance. Goal setting affects performance by influencing effort, persistence, direction of attention, and by motivating strategy development. Athletes use goal setting to improve skills, strategies and mental preparation. Coaches use goal setting to improve team factors, such as enhancing a team's overall culture, promoting positive developmental outcomes in their athletes, or developing team cohesion. Additionally, goal setting also assists coaches in improving and monitoring individual athlete progress and overall team performance. A study by Weinberg et al. (2001) found that, while most coaches were familiar with the concept of goal setting, a high degree of variability existed in how well coaches understood effective goal-setting practices and how well they implemented goal setting. The aim of this article is to provide strategies for coaches to improve their ability to implement goal setting with groups or teams and to present research-supported practices coaches can easily implement into their work with athletes.
