Abstract | Independent work and silent classrooms appear to be part of a wider discourse adopted by some schools across England and promoted as good practice by England's Education Secretary. This paper explores the effect of grouped and individual seating on the engagement of four boys in small group sessions teaching the English Language GCSE. Observations show how behaviour was detrimental when pupils were sat independently and in rows but improved when they were grouped together. The social constructivist elements of learning facilitated by grouped seating helped pupils find English relevant to their own lives and made the lesson more accessible. (As Provided). |
