Abstract | Immigration is a topic of utmost concern for colleges and universities in the United States. International students and the institutions they attend are often caught in the middle of rapidly shifting policies, powerless to do more than try to keep up with the immigration times. Although the Immigration Act of 1952 and subsequent legislation laid the groundwork, immigration is largely an arena governed by administrative regulations. Armed with an understanding of visa types and regulations, students and staff can take steps to prepare for potential delays. Staying abreast of ever-shifting immigration policy is important for both students and institutions, no matter who holds office. This article offers an overview of immigration policy and visa types pertinent to higher education. It then provides practical recommendations for both international students and those who advise them. (ERIC). |
