Abstract | Student-parents are an invisible but growing population on college campuses across the country, yet there is limited research regarding the needs of women who transition to motherhood while enrolled in undergraduate studies. Through focus group and one-on-one interviews with an ethnically diverse group of 11 mothers attending college on the West Coast, this study sought to explore the transition to motherhood as experienced by college student-parents. Semi-structured interview questions focusing on the experiences and expectations of these mothers suggested that student-parents benefitted from emotional support, required reliable childcare, and struggled with the lack of clarity regarding campus resources and policies around pregnant students and students with infants. This important life transition became a motivational factor in the mothers' pursuit of an education. Implementation strategies to support student-parent in higher education and the need for future research are discussed. (As Provided). |
