Abstract | The "Next Generation Science Standards" (NGSS Lead States 2013) call for all students to be engaged in investigations that require them to use skills and knowledge related to the science and engineering practices. In this article the authors describe how the mnemonic RAD, "Record-Analyze-Develop an explanation," was used by a second-grade teacher and a fifth-grade teacher, in a school in which approximately 60% of the students are considered to have limited English proficiency and 13% have a learning disability. The second graders used composition books, and the fifth graders used digital notebooks on the iPad. The authors share how these students used RAD in their classrooms to support writing within their science notebooks. The notebook examples come from students with high-incidence disabilities, who benefit from support in writing. (ERIC). |
